Is Petroleum Jelly bad for your Hair and Skin?

Hey Ladies, from what I hear their is a debate about the use of Petroleum Jelly.

Let me know what you think, and I'll later post my opinion, and Expert advice.

  1. I think petroleum jelly (aka grease) is ok in small amoutnts on the scalp to seal in moisture after it has been washed, before blowdrying. If put in the hair itself, it serves as only something to hold it down in place( temporarily) and makes it sticky, creating build up, and it is weighed down. If used on the skin, it acts to keep the skin's moisture from escaping, thereby keeping the skin soft ( yes it is not the grease that softens the skin, but the moisture)Use it after skin has been dampened..ie. shower.. I recommend the latter only, because there are major products that act as great scalp care, promoting healthy hair, while also keeping in the moisture.

  2. I personally believe that it's good for your skin but BAD for your hair.

  3. Petroleum jelly will seal in moisture, but does not create it.

I recently almost bought a lip product that advertised itself as 'healing'...a small little tub for almost $4!! My incredibly smart daughter looked at the label and the ONLY ingredient was "white petroleum jelly" so we went to the baby department and paid .68 for a big tub of it that had about 10x the product!!

Other than something like this or sealing in moisture after a paraffin treatment pedicure, I don't use it for anything...

  4. I think its like one of those old wives tales where vaseline is said to be good to use for just about everything. My mother used to put it on our cheeks when it was very cold outside to keep us from getting cold. I agree with Seleta that it is prolly better for sealing in moisture rather than creating it. And agree with Chic that it might be good for skin but not necessarily hair.

  5. According to my dermatoligist, it all depends on the skin and hair type. Petroleum is good for skin types like mine. I have oily skin, and when I put different oils, and other sprays in my hair, I breakout. Petroleum Jelly(plain, nothing added) will not clog my pores. Also it does seal in moisture. A Tip for smooth skin: After taking a shower or bath, do not completely dry off. Apply Petroleum Jelly to the skin. You will be mosturized until you wash again. Hopefull by the next morning.
